This piece immediately caught my attention due to it's strong contrast and composition. Not too often do you see a properly framed square composition. As strong as this piece is there is always room for improvement, that's in my opinion the true artist spirit. To start with the blending of the horse into the background on the righthand side. There are some triangle like shapes disappearing into the fog and dust which create awkward tilted lines that stack up 3 high. The reigns of the knight direct the eyes towards this even further causing it to get too much attention.
Another thing that catches a little bit too much attention is the metal emblem and red cloth attached to it. It feels as if this is lit by another light than the main image. This throws an otherwise very good detail aspect ratio off balance. And as a final remark there are a little bit too much highlights, I understand that with a knight in metal armor you'd see this all over the place but with a painting you can ignore this a little in order to create a stronger image. I'd suggest toning down the highlight on the knee and push it a bit more into the shadows.
This is definitely a rich and compelling work. I'd love to see more in this series with similar compositions and blending. An old topic but nicely executed.
I know he's only sitting on a horse, but when I look at this I immediately start daydreaming about him decimating entire armies in spectacular fashion. This is a compliment by the way, haha.
